Early Start

Newham's aim was to provide a service that would follow the government's 'Children's Centre Agenda' incorporating the 8 Sure Start local programmes with the Early Years and Childcare Development Service.

In implementing this structure:

• the Sure Start boundaries have been enlarged to cover all of Newham
• the age limit has been extended from 4 to 5 year old
• there is now a Sure Start for every child living in Newham this joined up service is called Early Start

There are 8 Early Start programmes with a remit for working with families and children under the age of five. Early Start’s aim is to increase availability of childcare for all children, working with both parents and children to promote physical, intellectual and social developments.

The programmes follow five main themes:

• improving  learning
• improving health
• improving  social and emotional development
• strengthening families and communities
• improving the availability, accessibility affordability and quality of childcare
